Fell Races:

There are a few Fell races in the Race Series. These come under the Fell Runners Association Rules which you should bear in mind.

Here is some information – from Andy – which may help you prepare for those races.

For those who’ve not done a ‘proper’ fell race before you may be surprised to find that some fell races have mandatory kit, meaning that you are required to carry e.g. a waterproof top as a condition of starting the event.  Fell races are ranked A, B, C (according to the amount of climb, with A being the most), and L, M, S (meaning long, medium, short).  The toughest races, in category AM, AL or BL, will require all runners to carry the ‘minimum mandatory kit’, even on the hottest Summer days. The fell races in our Summer Series are not so arduous, and so the kit requirement is up to the organiser to specify. However if the weather looks at all inclement the race organiser may require some or all of the FRA kit list to be carried.

FRA kit requirement is – full waterproof body cover including hood, with taped seams, hat, gloves, map, compass. A bum-bag or small backpack (camelbak type) is the normal way of carrying kit.

The remaining fell races in the Summer Series are Edenfield (4th June, 10.3km), Shutlingsloe (Date TBC, 5.8km), and The Roaches (also TBC and 9.3km). There’s a good chance if the weather is kind that there will not be a mandatory kit requirement, but it’s advisable to take at least waterproof top and bottoms, hat and gloves, just in case they are called for.
