Short-cuts – Turn right either at the A34 (dual carriageway/roundabout) or at Knutsford Road, and follow the main road back into Wilmslow.
Route Description
From the Rugby Club turn left down to the Carrs, turn right and follow the path through the Carrs to the children’s playground. Turn right on the road, then left to the roundabout, cross the road and run under the railway viaduct to a footpath on the left. Follow the footpath to Wilmslow Park, turn right, pass through the stone pillars and cross Station Road. Take the footpath to the left of the flats Continue on the short piece of road, and climb up and down the steps to reach the Prestbury link road (A538). Turn left to the roundabout, turn right onto Hough Lane. After 800m (1/2 mile) Hough Lane turns left, at this point take the footpath to the right to carry straight on over a rough field.
Follow the footpath along the right side of the field, to reach a gate and stile onto a track. Turn right and follow the track to pass underneath the railway line and hence to meet the main A34 at the roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway section. Cross the A34 to the left of the roundabout (Alderley Edge side), then cross the A34 bypass (new single-carriageway section). Follow the new bypass for a few metres and take the footpath which splits away from the road to the right. This leads onto the golf course, where the public path is marked by yellow posts (not very many of them, you may need to hunt around for them). The path over the golf course is a gentle curve to the left, and emerges onto Brook Lane (care required).
Turn right on Brook Lane, cross the mini-roundabout (Knutsford Road), and turn right on a small side-road after 300m. The road bends round to the right, run through a barrier onto Upcast Lane, passing a school on the left. Look out for a footpath on the left, which is only 100m or so after the school. Follow this footpath to a tee-junction, and turn right to join Moor Lane. Turn left on Moor Lane, following the road round to the right. After 500m when the road turns left go straight ahead through a gate, and follow the footpath to the right to cross a small bridge onto Lindow Moss.
At a cross-road of paths turn right down a long straight track through the peat, at the end turn right (onto the track called Rotherwood Road) and then immediately left. This track takes you to Lindow Lane. At the end of Lindow Lane cross Racecourse Road onto the Common. About half-way across the Common there is an intersection of several paths, at this point turn half-left. This should meet Racecourse road to the left of the Boddington Arms. Turn right, cross Racecourse road, and take the track which leads back to the Altrincham Road (A538). Cross the Altrincham Road and follow King’s Road back to the Rugby Club.
