Wright Hassall Leamington Regency 10k

I was hoping for another solid 4th at this popular Midlands race but came up against some quality runners from Birchfield and Coventry.  My consolation was to take 2 minutes off the MV40 course record and our work team made the podium (controversy over 2nd or 3rd).

A really beautiful course: first 5k was along a hilly trail bridleway, short section of road, twisting run back through splendid parks.  And amazing organisation to cram over 1800 runners into what was effectively a parkrun course.

    Rob,
I wonder if they were trying to tell you something when they allocated your race number!
Incidently, I don’t know if you are aware but you beat a real superstar from the past. Spencer Newport who was 2nd V40. About 14 years ago I was running for Salford in the 12 stage relays. At that time I was able to run around 15 minutes for 5K so wasn’t hanging about, when this guy who I later found out was Spencer Newport shot past me as though I was just jogging. It was only later I found out he had run 13.55 or something similar for 5k.

  2. And he shall hence be known Rob”The Beast” Downs

  3. Indeed the Beast Of Newbold Comyn. I’ve thought before that you could raise a bit more money for charity at Wilmslow by inviting bids to secure the interesting numbers.
I also beat a Kenyan and an Ethiopian – although they were both ladies ;). One of the Leamington athletes pointed out Spencer – she said that he’d run sub 2.20 at London.
