Jim and I rose to the challenge of this invitational mile. Macc Track in January is a bit chilly for a record attempt so it was a surprise when Jim set off at Bannister pace completing the first lap in under 63s. This left me trailing some way behind and unable to function as his Chattaway or Brasher. With a freezing headwind up the back straight we both struggled through lap 3 before Jim took off again to finish in a decent time.

Just to emphasise my lack of pace I then foolishly ran in the 100m, finishing last man in a wind-assisted 14.2. The combination of 5k (at Bramhall), 1 mile and 100m is rarely raced – with good reason.
