The Men
Our on the course reporter ran round – giving his commentary [below] as he ran:
Sherdley park XC
It has been a venue for Manchester XC for several years and the “going” underfoot is very weather dependent, a bit of rain and you are slip sliding round the course. However on Saturday it was dry so I nearly ran the course in road shoes!
I did a quick tot up before the start – 7 Wilmslow men and I looked to be the slowest – pressure off as I would be unlikely to count for the team (6 to count).
I started at the back and after about half a lap Stephen appeared in front of me, I overtook and hoped that he would follow me and then out sprint me (I am useless at sprint finishes). After a lap I had to pull up to retye my laces – school boy error – and lost 10 places in the process. Stephen cruised up behind me and we set off up the field. I reclaimed a few places but was out sprinted by a Sale runner. Stephen finished just behind me.
The course suited our faster men and we would have done very well in the team competition had I not counted. Next time I am hoping for some more Wilmslow men to beat me across the line!
