My intention of running at Burnage was cancelled when I had a taxi service job to take my son for his Covid booster! So I took my leggy self to Wilmslow to see what the impact my Tour-de-NordOuest ! What would a week of beach walking, beer and Fish & Chips do to my rehab plan.
The Wilmslow Director called for Roy to identify himself as he would be running his 200th parkrun. No one put up their hands – so we clapped him anyway. I thought he’d would have revisited Bramhall. Then we were introduced to the Styal runners who were pacing the race.
That was a good omen. It meant I could just check where the blue shirts were as I ran. Keeping my eye on pacer Lily [31-minute], I decided to see how much in touch with her I could accomplish and get near last week’s Congleton’s time where I benefited by keeping in front on the 32-minute Congleton Club runner pacer. Having started, I crossed the bridge and settled on the approach to the next bridge. I could see over Lily’s shoulder both the 33 and 31 minute pacers some 50-100m ahead! The pace felt OK-ish but I decided to get ahead of Lily and keep the other two blue shirts in my vision. Later up the hill to the Rugby club – they were still ahead! Then at the summit of the hill – Lily strode past me! I tried to keep her within 25m as we looped back towards the second hill and the 33 minute pacer was passed. At the commencement of the second lap Lily strode further ahead. Following her was hard. We passed the 32 minute pacer. The gap to Lily increased as we approached the Rugby Club hill. I started to blow at 4k. So concentrated on my style and ignored the invitation for a sprint finish as we approached the final 60m. My watch surprisingly showed I had broken 31 minutes! Not bad. It’s good having pacers. I look forward to the Striders pacing in November; and Wilmslow in December – I hope it’s not the day after the Xmas party!! No other Wilmslow runner there to cheer on – but I now see that JD had run. He ran his fastest this year.
The missing man from Wilmslow was indeed back at Bramhall; the scene of his first parkrun back in 2008. Ian led the man of the moment around the course. There could be no PB for Roy after such a long time since his debut – but he still manged a Season’s Best. Victoria on the other hand did PB. Barry was 4th.
The popular courses had some good results. At Alderley Park – James came 3rd with a PB. Jarrod PB’d as well. Richard, Oliver and Graham ran too.
At Alexandra Park : Tim 3rd on AG. Matt PB’d. Steve and Andrew first timed. Excitement at South Manchester as Nic held big Al off on the line in a photo finish to clinch the victory. No time improvement for JP.
Quite a few Solo runners out on Saturday. Not sure if it was Kite weather but Rebecca flew around to finish as first lady. Graham first timed at a busy Warrington with his quickest time for quite a while. Di returned to Marple after a years absence – ground conditions were much different after Fridays rain – so, no improvement; but good practice for XC. Still on grass was Big Col;. Back at a quiet Cheadle – no doubt getting ready for this weeks XC start – stormed round with a PB. Just a bit busier in Falmouth [47 runners here] IanR returned to Uni to first time at the campus. Jim back at Didsbury was 8th.
Foot Note:
Breakfast baguette at Petite Delice was very good if you like your bacon crispy!! bit on the ££ though.

Thanks Patrick for another great round-up of ParkRun news. As I said to you last night at training you are making excellent progress which is good to see. Keep it up and don’t push yourself too far! Nice to hear I got a mention at Wilmslow. Rob Downs was Run Director at Bramhall and also gave me a mention before we ran. Next target that 250 T-Shirt!
