Urban Orienteering, 8th September

Posted on behalf of Simon.
24 people took part in the Urban Orienteering activity on Thursday 8 September. Everyone was given a 1:12,500 map on which was marked 50 control circles, ranging in value from 20 to 70 points. The goal was to maximise your score over 75 minutes of running. There were no bonuses for coming back early but 30 points were subtracted for every minute you were late back.
Controls were typically items of street furniture (e.g. BT Green Boxes, Fire Hydrants, Lampposts, Electricity Substations, and Telegraph Poles), and you had to write down part of the identifying number at each control. There were a few incorrect answers, and a couple of instances of Eric Morecambe and Andre Previn: some right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!
It was quite dark towards the end of the run, which made it a bit trickier, but everyone seemed to enjoy the event.
Congratulations to Peter Bream and Jan on their victory. They were followed by Brian McCoubrey, and then a team of Gail, Julie and Lucas.
Congratulations also to Gareth and Elspeth who visited all 5 of the 70-scoring controls, including the one in Colshaw Park…
…and also to Rob and Roy, who were first back.image

A massive thank you to Ian Gilliver for organising a tremendous evenings fun that combined 75 minutes of hard running.
The experienced orienteers Pete Bream (plus Jan) and Brian came out on top but a special mention for Lucas Hill who ran 6.3 miles with his mum.
It is hoped to join Ian’s group on one of their events one Thursday in the winter which will be in Alderley Edge or Macclesfield. Chris will publish dates nearer the time.
