Summer Series: Bispham 10 mile race report

Bispham 10 mile

Sunday March 13th.

Summer Series, Race 4

Sharon was, for the second time in a month, the race’s winning lady with Janine and Diane also both in the top ten. Janine was 1st.F45

A second 10 miler in the first four races was Tony’s ploy for making the Summer Series a better fit for those doing marathon training. It was also our second visit of the year to the seaside. Ideal day for it, 120 at the start, 150 at the finish and the lightest of breezes. The course was two laps along the promenade covering ground that people may remember from Blackpool to Fleetwood and the North-West Half. It’s fairly flat but not quite as flat as you might expect, or hope for.  A 1:20 drive kept the numbers down but those who have run these early races have had the opportunity to build a good points base for the year ahead.

Jim was first Wilmslow runner home in 13th., Sharon was 31st.

Matt was first League 2 runner, I think that makes it 4 wins out of 4. He was followed by Tim, Janine and Andy, who was 1st.M65., 12 seconds covered the three of them. Then came Steve, Pete, who, making a rare appearance, was 2nd.M60, and Diane.

Tony took League 3 from Patrick, who muscled passed Nicky on the line. The result is subject to a television replay in response to shouts of foul play. Huma ran well at a distance at which she does not always excel.

The last time they met at Radcliffe, Alan allowed Sally to lead the first half then took her on the second. This time, she was 2nd. F35, and held him off with reasonable comfort. I had been beaten by Sue at Radcliffe and Cheadle, but overtook her at 5 miles. Sue faded in the second half, perhaps carrying too many training miles in her legs. Chris I overtook at 7 miles, he says he was back right behind me at 9 but I speeded-up in the final mile. An optical illusion, I think the reality was that I was tiring badly but Chris was even worse. Ian was 2nd.M70.

Jan chalked-up her third League 5 victory. Julie saw finishing a victory in its own right and Trevor did his own thing.

Given it was flat, warm and no wind, the race was surprisingly hard. Well organised, the results were posted on the HQ wall very quickly but then (why?) a half-hour wait for the presentations.
