Burtonwood 5-mile

Summer Series, Race 13
Saturday July 20th.

The heat-wave continues unabated, but at 24o perhaps we were fortunate, 24 hours early and it would have been 30o, and that's also the forecast for Monday. Burtonwood evokes, from the past, the image of massive US cargo planes and bombers. Nowadays its more humdrum, a mix between Moonraker and Hollins, I suspect only the calling of the Grand Prix brought the Series here.

League Leader Jim chalked-up another 100 points as our first runner home in 9th. place, a mere two seconds behind him was Graham, Tom was our third counter in 31st., Mike our fourth, Robert our fifth.

Meanwhile Diane was dominating the ladies race, finishing 34th. overall and smashing the club's ladies' record, if the report is correct, by an unbelievable 50 seconds. Janine was second lady, ahead of Louisa with Zoe and Rachael 4th. and 5th.

We'll have to await news of what all this means in terms of the Grand Prix.

Richard was second to Diane in Division 2 with Allan third, followed by Ian, Paul, Christopher and Matt.

Janine took her third successive 60-points, the first time Louisa, in her seventh race, had been beaten this year. With fewer Division 3 runners than normal good points were earned by Chris, Zoe, Gavin, John, Rachael and Alan.

Simon takes the first mile of a race steadily and then accelerates through the middle. Peter lets him go, then starts to pull him back in the second half. Pete came passed me in the third mile, looking as though he might catch Si, but could not maintain the momentum into the final quarter. I had ambitions of getting up to Nina and Carolyn only to find, instead, Claire coming passed me in mile 4 and then Gail in mile 5. Claire moved-up in front of Nina and Carolyn, she's improving noticeably week by week. Some are asking for a closer examination of these 'iron' tablets that Gail is taking. As well as me, she passed both Nina and Carolyn in the final mile. Gail, Carolyn and Claire all registered PBs. Simon beat Sharon, might be helpful if someone had a quiet word about a pub lunch not being ideal preparation, but it was her birthday and she did manage to keep her lasagne down all the way to the finish. Sue on her first race back had the decency to stay behind me, but for how long?

Peter took his second Division 4 60-points of the season but Carolyn's loss of places in the latter stages probably cost her the opportunity of moving ahead of Huma at the top of the table. Claire's 59 was her best score to date. Janet improved on last week beating Judith, who nevertheless broke the club L55 record.  Roy had a short break in the middle, Don decided one lap was enough. Nick had to drop-out at some stage, hopefully precautionary the last thing he needs is another injury.

Meerbrook is a little hillier, and no sign yet that it's going to be any cooler.
