Hutton Roof Crags Fell race : Saturday 25th May

Fell running is not something that suits me…I can never get into my stride and find both the up and down a challenge, particularly over rough terrain.

There are certainly benefits in terms of strength (perhaps mentally even)in addition to physically.

Having run a shorter distance at the BMAF Relays last week and with more 5k's coming up, I looked for something different today.

The race is part of a local fair in a small village close to Kirby Lonsdale. A well organised race and excellent course. Seven miles and 1300'. The course records are held by athletes of note : Mark Croasdale and Sarah Rowell in 1991 &1994 respectively.

I found to my cost that once the first 300 yards had been run that much of the race was along narrow rocky paths with overtaking a challenge (unless you are are a competent fell runner) !

Undulating rocky trail, a few parts that opened up more and a steep climb up some scree. A final half mile dash and back to a large vocal crowd .

Some further pedigree in the race winner : Rob Jebb of Bingley.

Its a 90 minute drive and a good race if you enjoy fell running or fancy a change.

1st : Rob Jebb 49.12

83rd : Nick Bishop 65.54

  1. For someone who isn’t a fell runner you ran a good time. Damian and I competed in the race about four years ago and I remember it being a tough course.
