A Trimpell Bimble

Race Report – Trimpell 20  – March 4th 2012

7 Wilmslow runners took part in this pre-April marathon race this year.  There had been others signed up, but being Summer Series tarts, they chose to do Cloud 9 instead once the race series was published (congratulations Andy on the 60 group 3 points!).

Sharon drove a group of us up to Lancaster.  Much car talk about what outfits to wear in the rainy conditions, especially from Craig and Patrick.  When we got there just in time (only an hour and a half before the start….) it stopped raining so choices had to be reconsidered.

The last we saw of Craig was on the track when we set off.  Patrick and I ran together for the first 12 miles with the usual comments from me about us setting off far too fast and then a debate about who was setting the pace….  We had a bloke in front of us who seemed to have a mild form of tourettes which started to get on my nerves by the 12 mile point and at the 13 mile point where we turn for home I found a new lease of life and stepped up the pace to get past him.  I used my usual long race tactics of “only 5 miles to go” rather than 15 done, and felt relatively good up to 19.

When I finished, Craig had already snaffled his post race mars bar, two sandwiches and a snickers bar.  I was followed by Patrick, Amanda, Angie, Sharon and Gail.  Amanda did a fantastic 20 mile PB and was likened to Tigger at the end of the race!

We were like the walking wounded on the way home – Craig was shivering and walking like John Wayne, Patrick was struggling with a frozen shoulder, Sharon’s calves were killing , Gail was disappointed at first until she did her maths and realised she had met her target of 10 minute miles and then cheered up (thankfully for us all, as none of us were fit for counselling her….) and I was threatening to be sick in the car!

All were pleased with their times apart from Sharon.  Craig and I were both less than a minute slower than last year.  Big PB from Amanda.  And Angie won the V50 prize.  Sharon was really disappointed with her time and was threatening never to run again on the way home.  I am sure we will see her at training on Tuesday and she shouldn’t be disappointed!

  1. Great day out, long long way and the thought of another 6.2 miles makes me feel a wee bit sick…..very chuft though as my target was to do 10 m/m and actually did 9.58 so just under, so yes no counselling was required…. Even had a little jogette this morning to see if my legs are still my friends and fortunately they are!!!!!!
Great day, thanks for driving Sharon and thank you for stopping at Costa on the way home – delicious vanilla latte and well and truly deserved. Well done all – some fantastic times 🙂

  2. This is not a race… It is a training run that happens to have marshals, water stations, chip timing, spectators, race numbers and a bloody big clock at the end. It’s a perfect test of how well the training is going. So with the help of the boffins at Runners World these are the predicted marathon times based on yesterdays jaunt.
    Craig 2.59
    Janine 3.22
    Patrick 3.27
    Amanda 3.30
    Angie 3.35
    Sharon 3.50
    Gail 4.24
    Well we can but dream.

  3. OMG – I retract my previous comment – I now need counselling – oh man thats not a dream but a nightmare – that’s 3 mins slower than my last one – infact my one and only other in 2010!!!!!!! Help me, please somebody…….. 😉

  4. Thanks Craig. Gail is now in need of therapy as you have predicted she will be 3 mins slower than her last marathon. I will pass on your mobile number to her as I hold you directly responsible…
You need to factor in Canary Wharf issues for me as this adds at least 15 mins to my time…

  5. Gail you are forgetting the crowd and big atmosphere factor, plus you are still in the middle of training so improving all the time. Think I will switch my phone off though just in case.

  6. I hope this doesn’t give the impression that I was disappointed in any way……??!

  7. It was definitely much more fun than the Stafford 20 – it was well marshalled and we received lots of positive encouragement from the spectators and each other…but, like Gail, the thought of another 6 miles makes me wanna check the bus timetables!
