Cross Country

Yes – it's that time of year again!  Our Manchester Area Cross Country League fixtures are:-

  • Sat 22/10/11 Heaton Park
  • Sun 13/11/11 Sherdley Park
  • Sat 03/12/11 Wythenshawe Park
  • Sun 15/01/12 Woodbank Park
  • Sat 11/02/12 Clayton Vale

Ladies events are around 8k, and start at 1.40pm – note earlier start than last year.
Men's events are around 9.6k and start at 2:30pm.
Keep an eye on the Club Calendar for any changes in timings.

The Nationals this year will be on Saturday 25th February, at Parliament Hill, London (sorry – no return to Alton Towers!).

For those who may be new to Cross Country – all club members are welcome to participate, the more the merrier.  The first 6 men or 4 ladies count towards the club team result.  However even if you don't figure among the 'counters' you still contribute by pushing down runners from rival clubs, thus reducing their team scores.  The club pays all entry fees.

Cross-country is excellent training, the off-road courses (and the mud!) develop leg strength, and the varied terrain is kinder than running on roads.  Studded shoes are normal, or spikes for the dedicated, and club vests are mandatory (worn over whatever attire is required to cope with the prevailing weather conditions!).

Please let Nick or Kate know if you might be interested.

  1. If you want some XC practice then there is the Len Mullen race at Woodbank Park Sunday Oct 9th over some nice woodland trails – see http://www.stockportharriers.com/index.php?q=club-races for details and some fascinating history.
