Manchester University Cross Country Relays

(or attempt thereof). October 10

What could be simpler? One lap around a well marked field (well, 25 football pitches actually), then hand over to an esteemed fellow club member at end of lap thereby completed. Ah, but it's the simple things that catch out such an educated membership as WRC.

This year we entered two mens teams and a ladies for this popular relay event which reminds us that the XC season is just around the corner. It's a fast, virtually flat course of just over 2 miles with the main difference being that instead of doing two or three laps in a Manchester league race you just do one. However quite a few of us had withdrawal symptoms and decided to do two legs which actually turns into a good training session.

Damien led off the men and such is the quality of the field that he came home only 12th after the first leg. He then handed over to Rob who somehow (in true Rob style) managed to go off course and run around in an unecessary circle or something. Jim, Stuart, Ray and Malcolm made up the A team and we came home a creditable 22nd (which was one place behind our position last year). Our B team also put in a valiant showing with roaring Roy and Chris Watts both doing two legs.

For the women it was all going so well after legs from Katie (Green) and Nikki, but then amid the confusion of handovers Captain Kate missed Nikki coming in (oh dear!). It was only after about five minutes that Nikki realised that Kate hadn't gone and let's say a rather interesting exchange was had…..perhaps the girls will divulge more in the newsletter…

  1. Just to say that Nicky and Katy were both extremely gracious about my faux pas!
