Summer Series – Race 1

Easter Sunday is not the ideal day to launch the Summer Series but, with the Road Relays last weekend and the South Cheshire 10k in the Grand Prix, it was unavoidable.

The weather was a little warmer than at Wilmslow but it was still and sunny and again perfect for running. We needed the expectation of high Series points to draw-out as many as runners as possible for the Grand Prix team and those who were able to make it were rewarded generously. Veterans of previous SS campaigns will tell you that mediocre runs in spring often score more highly than PBs in the autumn.

We did, however, get PBs I know from Gareth, Angela, Christine, Nina and Sarah (others please ‘comment’ below). Damian, as last year, stamped his mark from race one but, not 100%, felt it a race he, on another day, should have won. Ian’s SS debut was timely given the shortage of Group 1 and 2 runners. Tom was, again, 1st. M50. Rob, Tony and Gareth completed our team counters.

Kate led the Wilmslow Ladies home with Angela, Huma and Christine as our four counters. Kate also took the 50 points in the Ladies league, she led through the summer of 2008 only to be hunted down in the autumn. Angela took 49 points in both the Ladies and the 5/6 league. There’s talk this year of introducing a 3/4 league, if so, Gareth, Don and Andy are on the podium.

Goyt Valley is race 2 on Wednesday April 22nd. (link at top of web site). Last year it was one of the less well attended races (cue for record turn-out), so Don’s tables could have an unusual hue at the end of April.
