Fast PB course; Summer Series points; Cheshire 10k Championships; Cheshire Grand Prix individual and team counter; village hall cakes: there were many good reasons for turning out on Sunday.

.

With Mike Halman side-lined by his surfing antics and a rare road appearance by Malcolm the betting for maximum series points was rather less predictable than usual.  The odds probably favoured Stuart on a fast course but Malcolm was a dark horse with pedigree.

.

It was bright and sunny leaving home but by the time we were parking up in the race cow field it was getting ominously dark.  We scurried into the village hall just ahead of the storm.  A dramatic thunderclap announced the arrival of Bill and Jeff.  The rain lashed down threatening to spoil our PBs and trap our cars in the cow field.

.

By 11am the rain had stopped and the sun broke through as we lined up for the start.  Tarus Elly led us off for the first lap and with no Mike to niggle him he soon established an unassailable lead.  A small chasing group soon broke away from us and Stuart, Malcolm and I were left taking turns to lead the rest.

.

My over ambitious aim was to finish ahead of Stuart for the first time this season.  Based on recent form, I reckoned this would require a PB time of under 34 minutes.  The game plan was to attack mid-race to both build a decent lead and remove some of the infamous Parrot kick.  I hadn’t planned on Malcolm but he would just have to share the same pain.  As we turned onto the A51, I increased the pace and tried to relax into the long steady down hill.  After a fast kilometre I could no longer hear Stuart’s trademark breathing but I was still aware of not too distant footsteps.  Not fast enough and I tried to push on.  The small group of runners contesting 2nd place got gradually closer as we charged along but I couldn’t quite reach them.

.

As we finally turned off the main road I knew that I hadn’t done enough.  As the country lane back to Guilden Sutton began to undulate I could again hear Stuart in hot pursuit.  But after a couple more hills and corners I somehow remained ahead and just tried to run smoothly, saving something for the now inevitable last minute ambush.  As I started up the final hill, suddenly Malcolm burst out of nowhere and past me into a 2m lead.  Digging deep I drew level by the crest of the hill only for Malcolm’s long strides to once again lope past me on the corner.  Stuart was penned in just behind and the 3 of us finished in size order and touching distance.  It was certainly exciting and Stuart and I both recorded our second fastest times.

.

There were plenty more keenly fought battles with several minor upsets in series form.  Unfortunately after the sprinting efforts your correspondent could only witness these through glazed eyes from a sitting position.

.

Only 30s separated Ray, Graham, Bill and Jeff.  Graham (who appeared to have borrowed Mick Fair’s magic red racers) is hitting good form ahead of the cross-country season and managed to just hold off Bill and the relentlessly improving Jeff.  But not before Ray Eagle had broken away to finish ahead of all three of them.

.

Jane was 3rd lady winning the Cheshire Championship and Grand Prix in the process.

.

Our large and determined turnout was rewarded with both the 1st and 2nd team prizes and several category prizes.

.

Wilmslow was also confirmed as winners of both the Mens and Ladies team Grand Prix series.
