Silver** for Wilmslow but medals and County call ups galore
** See footnote at bottom
The skies were grey and overcast , rain was in the air and the course was a see of mud but despite missing out on first team to host club Vale Royal, Wilmslow runners scooped plenty of honours .
The ladies were short on numbers , Captain Kate away on a ski-ing trip and many saving themselves for the Manchester League next Saturday .
Sally Gilliver ran a fine race coming through the field well for 13th place and 1st V45. Sally received an invite for the County squad .
In the men’s race , numbers were again down due to injury , illness and non availability . All seven men from Wilmslow did the club proud .
Mike Halman took an instant dislike to running close to seven miles in six inch deep mud but battled through to 11th place .
A back to form Tom Mcgaff showed his liking for mud and then more mud, not far behind in 14th place .
The man to upset the customary order was ex cyclist Jeff Capper who on the results is credited with both seventh and sixteenth . The way I saw it was a super run for 16th .
All three got County invites .
Struggling with flu but running a brave race was Stuart Parrott in 19th place .
In the absence of other runners we needed a result from our next two counters , Ian Smallwood and Gavin Mendham .
They rose to the occasion helping the team to a medal finish , Ian finishing 37th and Gavin 61st.
Trevor completed our runners finishing 95th .
The small presentation ceremony was made smaller by the inclement weather but was well attended by the Wilmslow team who scooped twelve medals in total . The six counters in the mens team , the four vets who came second in the vets team race and Tom ( 1st V50) and Gavin (1st V55).
Well done all who braved the conditions.
www.cheshireaaa.com has full results.
Next week sees the fourth round of the Mcr XC League at Wythenshawe Pk . Ladies at 1.50 and men at 2.30. Sally Maddocks has a spare pair of xc shoes in size five and Stuart Parrott has a size six if any needed to borrow. Reminder will be sent by email.
**Despite being given silver medals , results suggest third , two points behind West Cheshire .
