Trafford Open Athletics Meeting – Tuesday 10th August
A lovely summer evening saw Steve Smith makes his track debut in the 3,000m in the second heat. Early in the race Steve settled into a good pace and found a couple of other runners to track as the laps went by. The winner of his race ran an impressive 9.15 whilst Steve ran 11:19.60 after a strong last lap and vowed to come back to beat the time he has now laid down.
Due to the good weather a lot more athletes had turned out to compete meaning the event was running late, so late in fact that it was still light when I started my warm-up but completely dark with the floodlights on by the time I actually raced in the 800m. I was in a faster heat than last time which meant I had to work very hard just to stay with the group but managed a strong sprint finish to record a time of 2:20.10 an improvement of over 3 secs from last time.
If anybody else wants to try competing on the track then there are still more meetings being held in August and September.

Matt – what you kindly omitted in your piece (no doubt to save my street cred) is that my two running companions were female and almost 30 years my junior! Cheers buddy
