Summer Series ‘Fell’ Race Requirements – Reminder

In view of the unseasonal weather experienced so far this summer (and the death of a Staffs Moorland AC runner from hypothermia), club members entering the Summer Series 'fell' races are reminded that these are held under Fell Runners Association (FRA) rules.

Although some 'fell' races - Cloud 9, Boars Head, Bollington Nostalgia – are relatively tame, the weather can make a huge difference.  Unless adequate protective clothing is carried, body heat is quickly lost in cold, wet and windy conditions, and the onset of hypothermia can be rapid should someone need to stop or slow down to a walking pace.

The FRA documents basic race safety requirements which briefly states that …..

Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment :-

a.   Windproof whole body cover.

b.   Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions.

c.   Map and compass suitable for navigating the course.

d.   Whistle.

e.   Emergency food (long races).

These requirements constitute “best practice”.  However, race organisers are free to impose additional safety requirements (eg. waterproof as distinct from windproof whole body cover) and competitors must be prepared to accept such requirements as a condition of race entry.

Race organisers usually ensure that whatever requirements they specify on the day are met by holding complete or random checks before and after the start of the race.

In the event of settled fine weather, the race organiser may decide to waive some of the above requirements.

WRC cannot condone the non-compliance with this advice, plus, you run the risk of being disqualified.

This equipment can be carried in a bum-bag or small rucksack.  Maps printed off the computer are fine (putting them in a plastic bag is recommended in case of rain!).  Otherwise, don't run alone – run with someone who knows where they are going !!!
