With the Town Crier starting us and a Town Hall finish, Chester Half Marathon also manages to include both an uphill start and an uphill finish. An essentially otherwise flat course with little drama, it is described as 'fast', but for the short killer hill just 200m from the finish, reminding me at the time a little of Goyt Valley up the side of the dam. But on reflection, perhaps not! The finish was a delight though, certainly an event that left you with an experience of the city that this race lends its name to. The city centre finish was wall to wall cheering and on the finish line there was the chime of chinking medals being shaken like cow bells. A great finish to a great race, with the walk out route taking you right into the heart of town. Tip for another year…avoid the Racecourse car park. It took us longer to get out than it did to complete the race. On a positive note there was almost a portaloo each and generally good facilities at the start, with a fine T shirt, goodie bag and a big sense of occasion at the finish. A good turnout for Wilmslow. Julie took the wise decision to withdraw at 3 miles in with an unexpected back problem. In summary…recommended!
