Great Eccleston Scouts Fast 4,
Lancashire. 26th May
I lined up alongside Di at the start
of this race which was advertised as a fast and flat 4 mile scenic route around
Great Eccleston and Elswick. I knew I had to do something impressive here to
keep up with Di fresh from her 5k PB at Dunham Massey. I managed to 'accidently'
stand on her toe in an attempt to slow her down, this resulted in a swift elbow
into the ribs. My cunning and discreet plan was in tatters and any chance of
bragging rights had gone. I looked further along the line and noticed an
elderly gentleman in a full tracksuit. I thought to myself that this man was
either Ron Hill or he thought the Jimmy Saville look was back in fashion. I was
hoping for the former as surely no one would think being mistaken for Jimmy was
a good thing. So off we went and I was keeping pace with Di and the overdressed
gentleman. Around 100 meters into the race I noticed that the gentleman was
struggling and thought if he does not slow down the cub scouts might have to
use what they learnt when earning their First Aid badge. Thankfully the
gentleman did slow down but unfortunately for me Di did not. Overall this was a
nice race on quiet roads and the free bacon butty and a warm drink after the
race was a nice touch.
