Whilst many of the club headed for a weekend in Wales we decided to go off in the other direction to Mytholmroyd in the Calder Valley just West of Halifax for the 'Le Two-r Halves Ten race. To celebrate the departure of the 2014 Tour De France from Yorkshire, Halifax Harriers had organised a 10 mile race along one of the most challenging legs of the route towards Halifax. The first five miles of the race were uphill and followed the longest continuous gradient in England, Cragg Road, and at the halfway point the route turned back on itself for the last five mile downhill.
We were lucky with the weather, a breezy but sunny morning greeted us. Pre-race tactics were to tackle the race in ' le two-r halves' – which roughly meant concentrate everything on actually getting up the five mile hill and then run like crazy back down! For some reason both Gareth and I had the same opinion on finishing – that the uphill had been the most enjoyable, strange as that may seem. The climb up hill was hard especially with the side winds sweeping across the moors however we both felt we got into good rhythms and felt more comfortable than we thought we would. Maybe all our hill training is paying off …. I think I surprised a few of the locals that a lass from flat Cheshire could overtake them on the hills!!
As we wandered slowly back to the Leisure Centre, an old man shouted to us both – ' if ya fancy going up t'hill again it's quicker on the bus!'
