Errors and omissions to Don and myself, please.

Ian

Good news, which Martin especially will be pleased to hear.  Since Ian posted this some revised results have appeared on the South Cheshire Harriers website which now seem to be correct and in line with our own perceived timings.

  1. 3 minutes slower than my Garmin which says 1:10:34…. better buy a new one 🙁

  2. Jeeze 3 mins Martin … Thought I was hard done by with the results saying I was 9 secs slower than my garmin!!!

  3. I was 7 seconds slower than my Garmin . Do you think the batteries were failing on the time keepers watch .

  4. Did you start your Garmins at the actual start time, or when you crossed the start line?
My excuse for a slower gun time than at the Trafford 10K was tripping on the pavement just before the 6Km mark (cost 5 seconds) and going off route by 40m near the end (cost 10 seconds. Otherwise, it was a fast race.
Congrats to Louisa, Bernard and Elspeth for their PBs. Commiserations to those who just missed equalling their PBs by a few seconds:
    Peter Speake (14 seconds)
    Andrew Whittingham (5)
    Sharon Johnstone (4)
    Katy green (1!)

  5. Matthew Taylor

Matthew Turner!? I entered the race twice and they still didn’t get my name right!

  6. I had a 16 seconds difference but two things:-
firstly I was using my phone not my Garmin and I don’t think it is as accurate. It recorded the distance 9.98kms. but my Garmin always records over, presumably because I don’t take the shortest route.
Secondly I had to stop to tie my lace (which is frustrating and incompetent) and my phone went into automatic pause, but its much slower than my Garmin to do so.
The advantage of the phone is that a lady with an American accent keeps telling me how I’m doing.
I actually think the time they have for me probably accurate.

  7. Started my Garmin when the race started not when I crossed the start line and I don’t generally stop it until a second or two after the finish , that’s if I remember .

  8. Slow I might be, Trevor, but even I would have struggled to spend 3 minutes getting across the line. I started it on the whistle 🙂 Was just mentioning it as it seemed strange but not the end of the world even if it now enters my records as a PW for 10k.

  9. Haha! I wondered who ‘Matthew Turner’ was! My time is 9 seconds out and I started my watch with the gun. I got 50.13. Not a PB for me so I can live with the slightly slower time. Must be disappointing for those close to a PB!

  10. I am also 10 seconds out, I heard them say 34 as I crossed the line, and it is recorded as 44 seconds. I hope nobody missed out on a PB because of the time differences.

  11. The likely explanations are as follows:
Some time before Chris finished, two earlier times were not recorded. This could occur if three people crossed the line together, or if two different pairs of people crossed the line together. After that, finishers are given the time of the runner two places behind. Thus, Chris’s time should be 44.15, Gail’s 46.14 (as she heard verbalised by the time recorder), Ian’s 46.58 and Nina’s 50.11. However, my time of 56.25 exactly agreed with my watch time. This means that between Nina and me, two unknown runners had their times recorded, but they left the funnel before their entrant number could be recorded. This had the effect of giving later finishers the time of the runner two places ahead, which in this case restored a correct result. Before Martin finished, two more runners crossed the line together, with only one time being recorded. This pushed Martin’s time back a place: his actual time was 1.10.26. (But he was inside his two 74 minute 2014 10K times anyway, so even the published result was not a PW).
The above explanation shows that, in most cases, the times recorded at the finish are within three seconds of the runners’ watch times.
The main lesson of all this for all non-chip races is to have funnel police who prevent people leaving the funnel early, and to train time recorders to write down the same time two, three or more times if groups of runners cross the line together. New Park Run teams please take note!
