Whitley 10k

Sunday 19th April 2015

On Sunday a few of us headed to the leafy lanes of Cheshire again, to run low key in the Whitley 10k.

This has been a popular summer series race. It was a perfect cool but sunny day. Paul N seemed to have a good race, relaxed and tanned from his holiday in Italy. The cheese, pasta and red wine did not slow him down too much. Chris seemed out of sorts and was dithering about whether to run or not. This is so unlike him as he relishes the chance to run, anytime anywhere. We should call him Martini Man! However, he did don his number and ran comfortably, keeping just ahead of Gail. Someone once said that 'they've never regretted a run, only ever regretted not running'. Gail, focussed, stayed on his tail, perplexed by a lady's odd running action ahead of her. It may have been odd but it was certainly effective!

Simon made a good start and steadily pulled away from the off. I was enjoying a pressure free return to racing. Cat caught me up at mile 3 and picked up the pace. It was like having a personal trainer coaching me. Mile 4 is all uphill and I was able to keep going, slowly pulling away from Simon and Cat. Very rude considering that they had both helped and encouraged me. In all fairness to Cat, her chip time was better than mine. Justice I think.

We rewarded ourselves with tea and bacon butties at the end, and a pat on the back. Overall, the credit must go to Simon as this was his 3rd race in 4 days, having completed Chester Spring 5 midweek and Arley 10k the day before. What an inspiration, an example of utter determination.
