A few updates with news about the club and also ex-members.
Training:
It’s at Alderley Edge next week. Meet at The Festival Hall 6.45. Warm up and meet at Whitebarn Road circa 7.00pm.
- 8X150M Hills…Get the dynamics right…Good forward momentum, driving arms…fast cadence with strong forefoot push off.
- Then onto The 1K Circuit.
- 1600…1300..1000…650…500 There may be subtle variations and based on your Group. Standard intervals with the emphasis on increased speed as we work through the session and enter the “speed endurance” phase…Always circa 400 to 800m reps.
All reps are pretty accurately measured and a on a good circuit. You may want to consider the times that you want to run the 1600/1000 in. Both good measures of current fitness levels.
See you Tuesday.
England Master or Mistress?
If the opposite of the masculine word Master is Mistress why don’t EA use it? Anyway, moving on quickly.
The very modest, yet hugely talented Claire Clancy, would never think to tell anyone, so allow me [Nick] to!
On the back of some excellent recent performances, 35:44 10k and 78:35 HM, Claire has been selected to represent England Masters in an event next March. Claire may add some more details!!
Claire was also 2nd and first Vet in the recent MACCL Race. Claire is pictured just behind race winner 1187, Sophie Wood.
Well done Claire. We wish her success on her debut. In the Chester HM [I think].
And also a Big shout out to Richard Coen. Selected for England V40 Masters at The Chester Half next year!
And another…Tim Billington…Another to be selected to wear an England Masters Vest!
Our training regime must rival the Kenyans!! 😊
Now Peter Speake has qualified. possibly for the 10k?
Mark Crossland
It was nice to hear thatex-member Mark is still running since he moved back to Yorkshire. Representing Ripon Runners he completed the York Marathon October 17th. He had prepared well for this; including running the Gritstone Grind Trail[!] with Gareth in September. His time of 3:50:08 was a PB. Knocking almost 5 minutes of his previous best in 2016.
Bernard McCarran
Another ex-=member. bumped into Bernard a couple of weeks ago. He’s moved to Langley and enjoying running in the countryside and the hills. He was to make an attempt at the Yorkshire 3 peaks. A very tough challenge. With cut-off times at several timing points. The weather wasn’t looking promising but he would give it a go.
Well, it happened. He was 3 minutes late at the 16 mile [second peak ] checkpoint! Still, he tried. It must have been a long walk of shame back to the bus to go back home! However, it was good preparation for the Langdale Marathon yesterday which he completed.
And lastly.
By now you will have heard the demise of Maurice Minns who passed away at home on Thursday.
As Nick reported: Maurice had been in ill health over the last six months.
Very sadly, Maurice Minns passed away peacefully and at home on the 21st October. Maurice had been in ill health over the last six months.
Up until the last three years, Maurice had been the Race Director of The Wilmslow Half Marathon for some 30 years. Belligerent and cantankerous at times, but deep down a heart of gold, as I got to find out working with him for some 15 years. Maurice ran with Wilmslow Running Club from its beginnings and until the early 2000s, as well as being a huge part of the Rugby section.
Much of what the clubs at the heart of the race enjoy, Wilmslow Phoenix, Running & Rugby Clubs, were all developed through the hard work of Maurice and his vision. From the very early days of the Half Marathon, he led the team his way…pen and paper…no technology.
The relationships with the charities were forged by Maurice, and delivered large donations over many years.
Sometimes the Half Marathon meetings could get heated, but everything forgotten over a beer and a smile…most likely muttering under his breath…”daft bugger”!
In later years and prior to his illness, I would meet Maurice for an early doors drink. Chew the fat, and smile at the politically correct modern world. Maurice would struggle to understand that now…on occasions I do!
When you are next at the Club, look around you and realise how lucky we are. Thank you Maurice.
We have lost a huge part of the Club, and one that always lived life his way.
Rest in Peace
