Even after Friday night’s Mid-Cheshire 5k we still had 37 club runners out on Saturday. They ran at 11 events.
I am just back this weekend. Again there’s just the basic results. Feel free to add a comment about any PB, AG or other success.
Big news items: Tom is the new Category Record holder at Alderley. And Ian registered 75th Age Category Win for the V75 Category win!! Wow 😊
While some members choose to hone their bodies in the warmth of mainland Spain or its islands; others in the lake district or the hills in Wales. I chose god’s country again. The hills , sand and steps slowly building up strength was my preparation. Yorkshire Wolds, Cleaveland Way and Filey Brigg were my preparation.
But after a 300m warm-up the back, calfs and quads informed me I might need a week to just to recover from my week away. Still, having learned from the Gentlemen’s Club runners at Stretford the other week. I positioned myself nearer the start than normal.
Having ticked off my sub-30 here last year – today it was to PB and set Ian a time to better. There was a delay to the start – couldn’t hear why. But seeing I was surrounded by several prams I began to fear the course had been reversed! Needless panic. Everyone turned and started walking towards and past me!
We started on 1-2-3 go! The whoosh of fast runners passed me with only a few bumps to contend with. After 30 seconds there was a 30-metre gap between me and the fast-pack. Great – for a change I could run without constantly changing my pace. Thirty seconds later the faster ones who were further back started to stream by! I was Blowing already. Perhaps I would need to come back again as today might go belly up. Especially as My head phones played up at the start and there was no music to gauge my pace to the beats!! However, At 1K they let me know that I’d gone really fast. At 2K slower. At 3K much slower. It now would be challenging going for a PB let alone the time I was after.
Looking back to when my parkrun times suddenly went south [not knowing I was suffering from arthritis] I noted that it was in May 2019 I ran a rather slow 26:41. And after that the times steadily got worse. And I discovered I’d need a new hip. I set a goal to one day try and beat that time.
So that Goal of getting under that time would have to wait another day or month or so.
The final, short lap 3 – seemed much longer this time. But a glance at my watch as I spotted the finish line surprised me. My charge to pass the elderly looking gentleman in front of me lasted about 10 seconds. And I plodded on to the finish. Just about keeping the heavy footsteps behind me. Behind me. The watch indicated I was due a really good reward. And I Queued for several minutes hovering between what to have: bacon batch or sausage batch. When it was my turn to be served, the server informed me that the chef was ill that day and neither option would be available!!! ☹
The PB achieved. The time for Ian set. The 26:41 Goal beaten. 😊 I could always stop ant Peter Herd’s on the way back 😊 A new goal is required. There’s still Cheadle, Woodbank and Wythenshawe for sub-30. But Lyme Park might be a hill too high for 2023.

Morning Patrick. I thought I would get in before Roy this week. Once again thank you for a brilliant update on the WRC parkrun results. I managed to meet Louisa at the start of the Stretford parkrun despite the other 674 runners. Superb run from Louisa, 1st lady and a PB! However I like to think that I pushed her along to a PB as I was only five and a half minutes behind her!
Good to see John getting in early, a rare occurrence these days!
Great run by you Patrick. You really are back now, unlike me. I seem to be going in the opposite direction. I have never been over 30 minutes at South Manchester before last Saturday. Nothing works like it should and I can only hope a possible injection in my left knee brings some relief. Anyway, enough about my woes. Generally WRC members are running very well wherever they go which is great to see.
