Even more club runners [46] were out running at 14 parkrun events this weekend.
Gareth and Victoria chose Nottingham to stretch their legs. Whilst PaulG and the J’s chose the grass at Wythenshawe after all the rain we have had recently!
Soloists this week included: Jan broadening her mind at the City of Dreaming Spires and running her fastest 5k for quite a while.. Mike back in the Lakes. Di getting sand in her shoes down in Wales and finishing second lady – as did Janine in Salford. JD at the Pally and just one at the Etihad this week – RichardL.
The Parkrun Series courses saw quite a bit of club activity. Apart from Didsbury – where local Lass Kate solo-ed.
Starting with the Country Squires. Bramhall saw Jim return after a 10-year absence. First member home in a quickish time. Matt was next club runner home with a PB beating his 2016 time by almost 20 seconds. Rob had a quiet run – is he marathon training? He was still top on AG! Graham and Paul also ran. Over at Lyme Park there were 8 club runners. Honours to Richard our first runner home. Tom, first-timing, was the second club runner home. Then Steve and Ian. Sharon was the second lady overall to finish. Susan, with Charlie’s pacing[?], was 4th lady finisher. Steve and Kathryn had a PB. Chris was back and faster than his last visit there [When he showed me a clean pair of heels going up hill at the start – though his socks might have been a bit muddy 😊]
The WAGs had only Wilmslow to go at this week as Alderley Parkrun was cancelled this week due to an event taking place. NOTE: It is also cancelled next week too! Back to Wilmslow – Sam was back in town and was the first runner home. Ashley was 6th. Then Nic who was first lady finisher! Rebecca second lady. Dave and Markus accompanying each other around. Colin and Oliver back in town. Rachael on her 49th Parkrun!
Only one runner at Didsbury – Kate. Returning after a yearlong absence. There were more at the other Freshers course – South Manchester. Seven in All. The Manchester B’s were first two club runners home. Followed by Nicky and Big Al . Then Sue beating John on a photo finish? And Don also. Nicky and Tracy were top 2 in AG.
No runner at the Alex Grand Prix track this week. But, there were three runners at Stretford. Reversing my car into a parking space I espied Big Ron [aka Roy!] in the car parked next to me. It turned out that the Elite Guard were to compete here today. Lord Ian was expected soon. My challenge was to get under the time I got here last December 29:57 – my first post-op sub 30. I was still feeling it in the legs from last weeks unbelievable time. By the time I’d changed, and put running shoes on – I had only time for a 1 lap warm up. Couldn’t see the founding members of the Elite Guard, So I positioned myself in the middle of the pack. Just before we started spotted the duo, at least 10 rows ahead of me!! Curses. Had hoped to track Ian around for a few K and guarantee my goal time.
Off we went. It was busy. Bunching all around me. My attempt to hug the track was impossible. Had to go around straggler, Prams and very small children running with dads being held at arms length. Sod it. Ended up on the outside lane coming around the track. On the narrow path out to the Lap there was a lake to contend with. Hadn’t planned on the squelching soft grass. Watch batteryy on red so had forgone ear phones. On the first loop-back spotted Ian – 34 seconds ahead! Missed Roy.
Very busy now. Seemed to be lots of runners [Turned out to be 709!!]. Tried overtaking on the grass verge. Risky. Occasionally saw a glimpse of Ian. Couldn’t see Roy. One attempt at overtaking ended up with left foot on path, right foot on soft verge for seventy metres until I could get back on the path!! Calm down. Second Loop back and there was Ian 27 seconds ahead. Oh Well. Lets just concentrate on style and finish. Into the Stadium and there he was going round the bend to the finish funnel.
It took quite a long time to get through the funnel and process the finish token. Didn’t spot Roy or Ian afterwards. Professionals – probably did a cool-down! Still, you can get coffee now from a van outside the arena. Pity two of the 5 people in front of me each ordered about 5 complicated drinks. Got back to the car and checked my watch. That was time good. Pity I started that far back. Perhaps next time try a bit nearer the start line. Last time I was 332nd! This time 319! An improvement 😊
Apologies if anyone has been missed or an achievement not recorded.

Thanks for the interesting report, Patrick, and well done on your time at Stretford.
No pacing by Charlie, unfortunately. I was ahead of him but youth was on his side as we went up the last km and he caught up with me.
Thanks Patrick. You do seem to like calling me “Ron”, although correctly “Roy” as your article progressed!
I could see both you and Ian on the first lap as you were both probably around 30 seconds ahead. I faded more on lap 2 and lost some 2 to 3 minutes on the pair of you. Another good run by you and the evergreen Ian A.
Some fine performances all round.
Thanks Patrick for another excellent report and well done on your latest improved time. Good to see that Ron Pownall enjoyed it as well!
I can always rely on JP for a good quip! Now that he’s entered my age group it’s good to see that it’s not impaired his faculties 🙂
