We have a report just in from our new Race Reporter Nicky!
What a day! – the rain was lashing down as we collected our numbers. We huddled together in the car – eyebrows were raised as Nic exited from a steamed up car with three women!
We peeled off layers at the last minute which I then regretted. I couldn’t feel my arms, the cold was making me feel sick. As I was bending over to tie up my laces for the first time of many and Angie went whizzing past me. I felt like I’d hit the wall before the end of the first mile. But this was the ‘Summer’ Series – I couldn’t give up.
The rain had eased off but there was a biting wind. The first 10k was along the Middlewood Way which wasn’t too bad underfoot. However along the canal for the next 5k it was like cross country and we were slipping and sliding. Poor Tracy came a cropper. As I passed her she was waiting by the bridge for a lift back to the finish.
I finally got into a rhythm by the last 5k – though it did seem to go on for ever.
When I crossed the line Huma was proudly showing off her medals – well done the girls! Tracy hobbled away to get her knee bandaged. In the meantime Nic nearly passed out at the finish – spasms in his back. He had to wait in the queue behind his wife to see the medic.
All in all, a tough race and then to top it all we hadn’t brought any money to the start where the coffee van was. We were given aluminium blankets which were welcome. The saving grace was the camaraderie – at last the WSS is back! 🙂

It would appear that the ‘Bown’ family don’t have the best of luck! I trust that other family members were able to help Nic and Tracy when they returned home. You know, hot drink and straight to bed ( and ‘no’, that’s not what I’m thinking!)
Ha ha it was all worth it for the WRC camaraderie what an amazing team we have in the worst of weather you all still made it good fun! And you all cleaned up with first female and so many category wins so proud of all of you xx
