Huma-Baloo at the relays!

Tuesday evening saw a contentious finish at the relays.

The evening had started off well. A big turnout saw 4 sets of runners training on the Carnival Fields. Additionally, a set of poorly runners – N’inja’s – also were present discussed their injuries, training and what foundation was best for covering bruised ankles, and what socks looked good too.  They also observed from a distance and helped the Head Coach. The 150 x 10 reps and 5 laps fartlek went well, but then the mood turned from a carnival atmosphere to a bristling mass of agitation.

As the training came to an end. It finished with the relays. With 4 teams of 3 lining up for a 6 x 150 relay, the mood changed to competitive bolshiness. It began, when the relay changeover point of the trees was blatantly ignored. The second runners decided to wait in the shade – some 30 metres short of the trees – concerned about getting sunburnt. Despite pleas from team N’Inja’s who were adjudicating the runners stood their ground at their preferred position.

Things then soured further as two teams became quite combative when, on one of the change-overs, a runner was seen to be dancing away well before her partner had arrived. Despite calls to return the runner chose to stop, wiggle in a provocative manner and then proceed. After that, change overs were then observed to be somewhat dodgy  with name Col-ing and the crowd at the finish Russ-ling to launch a complaint. The VAR system was unable to intervene and the race continued as the cameras were  not working.  And though the Visual Adjudication Referee, awarded a 5 second standing penalty, this failed to subdue the mutterings.  However the result stood and the crowd and the runners began to disperse.

All relays runners will now be reminded to behave and observe the rules and courtesy to other runners in future relays.
