After a blazing hot day on Saturday we woke to torrential rain and thunderstorms. However by 9.30 the rain had stopped and we were hopeful not to get struck by lightning during the race.
We were warned that it would be wet underfoot and there would be some rivers to wade through. I didn’t think it was too bad apart from at the end of Birtles Lane where we had to run through water ankle deep which obviously resulted in a lot of squelching sounds for the rest of the run. I think the course was slightly altered at the end as a road had been closed presumably because of flooding. Consequently we had a few more undulations before turning left towards the leisure centre.
We were a select few to run, all walking away with prizes as Mike and Angie were promoted to first in their age category as the people ahead of them were on the podium.
The main reason for me doing the Macc half was in memory of Simon Fenton as this had been his swan song last year and he achieved the course record for V75.
I have various excuses for running slower than last year including lack of long runs/the tri last week/looking after my granddaughter the day before. However I was happy with my position and us girls managed to win the team prize. Everyone was complaining that their times were down from last year (apart from Di!).
Di really was the star of the day as she was running for AESG in the schools competition and they won a rather large trophy.
There was a really friendly atmosphere, Nic as always did a great job on the mike. There were two Running Bears entertaining us. We were promised some bands throughout the route but I think some of them wanted to protect their instruments and didn’t appear. I always love doing local races. Many thanks to the supporters among whom Chris Cannon, Pete Stock and some friends from Macclesfield Harriers.
