It was worth coming all the way to Florence to be first lady at parkrun!
The winter course is a double loop of a park adjacent to the river Arno on paths. It was very low key only 33 runners, a proportion of whom were tourists. The Italians are rather wimpy when it comes to running in what is for them chilly conditions – it was about 5 degrees but beautifully sunny.
The runners briefing was very brief, no mention of avoiding other park users (as there were hardly any). However they did welcome all us tourists – some from Russia and Peru as well as the UK. We were not to be trusted with the tokens. The barcode scanner had a necklace of tokens and moved one round as each runner passed!
There were plenty of refreshments at the end and the volunteers were very friendly. It is obvious that parkrun hasn’t quite taken off yet in Italy. We passed various runners on the way there but they had no idea where the parkrun was when we asked for directions!
