Why most of us elite athletes/dreamers lay out in the sunshine contemplating our next PB! Spare a thought for some of our colleagues who are battling injury and rehab. May they return to fitness soon. If anyone else is injured and has been missed from our report please let Simon know.
Injury Update: August 1st
Jim Pendrill.
Achilles is definitely the injury de jour. It has been great to see Jim back racing this summer after well over a year out with an Achilles injury. Unfortunately the problem has returned so it is rest and strength work in the gym for a few weeks with the hope that it settles down.
Barry Archbold.
A long term calf injury last year is followed by Achilles this year. As with Jim it’s rest, strengthening, physio and getting out on the bike. The pain has eased sufficiently for Barry to hope to be back training in a month.
Matt Taylor.
Matt has been carrying his injury around for weeks. Being a doctor he benefits from immediate self-diagnosis. However being a runner he also suffered from PIRA (patient-ignoring-resting-advice) syndrome in the early days. Latest from Matt:
“My knee feels okay until I run. I can plod along slowly but anything more than that and I pay for it afterwards. I have had an MRI scan and been to an orthopaedic surgeon. Although I have a number of problems within my left knee on the scan including degenerate cartilage and a large cyst it is difficult to say what is causing my pain. I have been advised against any surgery, had the cyst drained and had a steroid injection 3 weeks ago. The cyst has already returned and my knee still aches after anything other than very gentle exercise. I have bought a road bike but struggle with anything over 20 miles. I have been having swimming lessons to learn the front crawl properly as breaststroke also aggravates my knee. I am also attending a weekly Pilates class. The difficulty is I have no idea of prognosis or when I will return. I just have to be patient and try to keep fit doing other stuff. I don’t think I will be racing again this year but hope to return to gentle running. I’m learning not to rush it as I’ve already made that mistake, more than once. Hope to see you first on a Thursday evening just not sure when yet.”
Trevor Faulkner.
Trevor has been side-lined for a couple of months with a pain above the right knee. This got scanned last week and he waits for the results.
Huma Rahman.
Huma tore her calf muscle in June last year and has struggled with it since. An attempt at a comeback in this year’s Round the Runway strained it again so whilst pain free now she is continuing strengthening exercises and hopes to come back training in September.
Damian Nicholls.
It is not just Darcy Nicholls and sleepless nights keeping Damian away from training. He has damaged his back – again – and under the Chiropractor – again.
Stephen Feber.
Stephen damaged his calf a month ago and will remain out for another two weeks. His exceptionally regular attendance at Lyme Park parkrun will be badly missed when he relocates to Bristol next month.
Mark Crossland.
Another Achilles, Mark has been out for three months after damaging it juggling a fence panel. He was determined to make the Pie and Peas which he did with a very gutsy performance last night.
Chris Cannon.
Another Achilles, another DIY injury – this one clearing a gutter. Chris followed Mark’s determination to run the Pie and Peas however uncomfortable so another gutsy performance. Less DIY and more training seems to be the way forward.
Its really good to see an update on our missing run buddies, so thank you Simon. We can all appreciate the frustration at not being able to run so I wish you all the best, especially those with long standing issues. Jan
Fingers crossed for you all, the frustration of injury is only understood by those of us who have been there. Good luck to you all, patience and perseverance will get you there in the end.
what a pain, as Julie says we all know the frustration
Try and be patient and allow time to fully recover. Good luck and hope to see you all soon x
Hope to see you all back soon. DIY can damage your health which is why I retired from DIY 45 years ago – good decision!
