Having already signed up for the Cheddleton Christmas pudding race before Tony created the ‘winter series’ I felt very smug and organized. However the combination of freezing temperatures and steady rain as we drove over to Staffordshire dampened my enthusiasm.
We tried to warm up wending our way between the back runners/walkers of the fun run and really just wanted to get it over with.
The course is three laps starting with a steep hill. Just when I thought I’d made it to the top cheered by the sound of bagpipes we turned the corner to make another ascent. However what goes up…… we were rewarded with a downhill towards the school. I tried to pick off all the runners who had overtaken me on the uphill. Patrick was still in the distance about 100 yards ahead.
Finally on the third lap I had warmed up enough to take off head band and gloves, one of which I unfortunately dropped.
I eventually caught up Patrick at the end of the second lap. A lady was at my side about half a mile from the end, actually urging me on. I asked her after the race why she hadn’t pipped me at the post but she said that would have been mean! They obviously play by different rules in Trentham!
We were rewarded with tea and cakes in the school hall. It was a very friendly race, rather like Langley, with an array of generous prizes ranging from whisky, wine and chocolates, to Lego and a plug adapter!

when I saw the afternoon weather, I appreciated that Wilmslow Parkrun had not only been the easier, but also the better, option
