Knype Pool, Summer Series, Race 2, Sunday February 22nd.
Knype Pool is, or could be, a lovely run. But it was a day when the ‘Summer’ in ‘Series’ seemed least appropriate. No-one was talking beforehand about the race, only the cold and what they were wearing. Well perhaps not everyone, I’m sure I saw Geoff and Allan sporting a club vest , and unlike the rest of us, who had two layers underneath, only naked shoulders. Jim was wearing very short shorts but generally most were displaying due modesty and few knees were in evidence. Tony looked equipped for an Arctic expedition.
The snow started to fall gently as the race started but once you got going, it did not feel too bad and, unlike the National Cross-Country at Parliament Hill the day before, the going was reasonably firm rather with not too much mud.
The girls were our stars; Di was the race winner with Sharon second, Janine 1st.F40 and Sally 1st.F50.
Jim was the first Wilmslow runner home in 4th., and 1st.M40,, followed by Tom, 7th., and 1st.M60. Allan was 8th., Mike 10th. and Phil 23rd.
Richard was first League 2 runner followed by Andy, Paul and Janine.
Sally took the 60 points in League 3, Chris was second then Huma, Geoff, Tony, Alan and John.
League 4 has lost Huma and John to League 3 but gained Kate and Catriona and Sue from Division 5, in return for Simon and Rachael. 4 is normally very competitive, and perhaps it was today, but in my first race since Langley I trailed-in last too far back to see another Wilmslow vest. Jon, who is good off-road, took the 60 points followed by Kate, Bernard and Gail.
Simon’s promotion campaign got off to a good start, League 5 winner ahead of Don, Sarah, Belinda and Trevor.
Sharon and Amy, having not completed last year’s Series, have not, as yet, been allocated to one of the ‘ability’ leagues. If I understand the new rules correctly they will invited to register as a Summer Series competitor and be allocated to a league or be given the option of being a casual racer outside the league system.
It would be nice to think it will be warmer on Cloud 9 next Sunday, but it snowed during last year’s race.
