Considering the distance a huge number (30 at last count) of club members took part in the Fairy Freckled Cow Trail Race, around the Llyn Alwen reservoir near Denbigh.
The weather was superb, bright sunshine, with a gentle breeze, not quite strong enough to keep the flies at bay but very pleasant to run in. A bad accident closed the road on the way to the race, and the organisers delayed the start by 25 minutes to allow many runners (Trevor included) to take part. However, slightly delayed, we set off on the combined walking and biking trail around the water.
The terrain was gentle rather than arduous, although this was definately an off-road event with a couple of significant climbs. At one point the field in front could be seen winding up a long hill – not a sight for the emotionally unprepared. However, as Tony tells us, the purpose of our short recovery sessions is to prepare for hills, and to keep on running over the top (rather than stop to get breath back!). There were several bridges and great views to keep the spirits up, and the race finished on the dam itself. Organisation was good, with one water station in the race, plus an innovation – tubs of yoghurt provided at the end – surprisingly palatable considering the state of some of the runners on finishing.
Provisional results are here, but (as always) subject to revision. If any club runner has been left out or is shown in the wrong place please let Don know (or post a comment here).
Malcolm was overall winner, and the first lady was Phillipa Taylor in a time of 47:20

Waiting for the delayed start I was thinking the race should be renamed the Fairy Freckled Flippin Fly race, although once we started the flies couldn’t keep up and weren’t a problem. Didn’t spot any cows though, fairy freckled or otherwise!
Enjoyable race on a scenic course. Although if you suffer from vertigo, best not to look down as you cross the dam!
First time I’ve been given a tub of yoghurt and a plastic spoon as I crossed the finishing line. But I have to say the yoghurt was delicious!
You get a tray of yoghurt at the finish of the Muller 10K, not sure if they give you a spoon though.
