Northern Vets Track & Field Championships – Hyndburn

Sunday 26th September

High up in the hills of Lancashire on a dull & windy afternoon, Jane & I ventured to the Northern Vets Track & Field Championships. Martin was convinced that the track was sloping & it should therefore be considered a fell race, one thing was certain, it was very windy on the finishing straight. It was great to see V35 to V70's competing from 100m to 5000m & in all field events, it's certainly worth us considering doing some more of these Masters events as we have such a wealth of talent our our club.

Jane ran well in the 5000m as it was a very busy field & she was running with an injury. Mine was the first 1500m that I had done in over 20 years so I was quite pleased with my first attempt. Both Jane & I received gold medals for being the first in our age group & also attaining the relevant qualifying times.

5000m > Jane MULRYAN (V55)   21.06

1500m > Louise RUDD (V35)   5.01

  1. Well done Louise; Jane and ‘gang’ at Trafford. Apart from a solo 5K in Macc a couple of years back (don’t ask) I haven’t raced on the track in aeons and keep putting it off. Many in the club would enjoy track racing – but one must do it a few times to get in the groove. This summer I have done (also solo) some ‘long rep’ sessions on Macclesfield’s track which hasn’t done me any harm. Perhaps a few keen ones could do group sessions next year – if the Track Appeal is successful (or go elsewhere). I am also getting supportive of the view that vets should train and race ‘short’ rather than (or as well as) ‘long’ to slow down ageing!

  2. Thanks for the support Ray, you’re right it’s a great way of getting some speed back in your legs.
