  1. By comparing times with the last flat 15km race we ran (Waterloo 15km on Mon 4 May 2009), we can see how climbing hills has a disproportionate effect on slower runners (as does higher temperature and wind). From the OS map, the Meerbrook 15km has 345m = 1150 feet of ascent. The person with the least increased time was Tony, who finished in 66.09 (c. 4 minutes increase). Nina finished in 97.05 (c. 15.5 minutes increase). Thus, although Nina’s race time was only 47% slower, her increase was nearly four times as great. Other Wilmslow runners have increases inbetween that probably lie on a roughly-smooth curve. Some time ago I estimated that hilly races cost 1 second per metre of ascent for 7-minute milers. Thus, for Dr. Kate (for example) we should expect her increase to be c. 345/60 minutes = c. 6 minutes. In fact, her increase was c. 10.5 minutes, the extra time probably accounted for by both loss of training because of injury, and the elevated temperature at Meerbrook (c. 21C) compared with Waterloo (c. 10C).

  2. Meerbrook is the longest and, on paper, the hardest race. For what it’s worth I found it the most enjoyable and least gruelling of the three. The scenery is terrific; a plan helps cope with the terrain and the eye-balls-out descent doesn’t, mercifully, last too long. At Langley, which I do like very much, the descent goes on and on and I find the several flatter sections very tiring. My legs are wrecked afterwards. Shady Oak is a killer.
