Without a solid base of training due to tiresome niggles since a more lengthy hernia related absence from running , you sometimes try to grab windows of opportunity .
Having missed a number of summer series races this year for a variety of reasons I had calculated that Goyt would be race three for me and I could just about squeeze seven in .
Besides , washing some mugs one day recently I looked in admiration at a 2003 Summer Series Mug : 1st Tom McGaff : 2nd Nick Bishop …..aaagh memories .
I had recently aggravated an old achilles injury but despite my body telling me not to on the Sunday run I felt that I should be ok to have a reasonable run ….or not .
Rarely do teenage children forewarn their parents that it may be foolish to run…..What do they know !
Tony and I compared injuries pre race but the likelihood of a decent points score decided it : besides we are here now.
Four miles of road and one mile of trail Malcolm said : lets do it !
Start of conservatively and be sensible , over the bridge and around the lake : Heading for 47 points , things ok , bit sore but hey ho ! Slow up a touch , don't be silly : Steve Dempsey catches me : When asked if I am ok , reply that achilles is a bit buggered ….Be sensible says Steve who pushes on , Mike Cooper passes fresh from his mountain epic .
Serious thoughts of pulling out now but as I debate the issue we will soon be halfway !
Hit the off road section which finishes any hopes of nursing the achilles home : A stream of blue and gold pass by : it allows me to see the rivalries in action . Everyone looking fresh …good on you !
Hit the final descent to encouragement from the Bishop Boys " Told you were daft dad ".
Thanks lads .
Over the line and finish . Not sure how many overtook me but I guess that if lucky perhaps my efforts might gain me 35 points but may mean that based on diagnosis that the four races still needed are a non starter .
The moral "common sense will always beat foolhardiness even when its your kids giving the advice !"
Retire to the pub and dine out at MacDonald's .
Perfect rest for achilles : two hour drive this morning to Dudley in traffic : oh for an automatic car .
So , some cycling perhaps swimming and see what the pyhsio says : when does XC start !
Nick.
Capenhurst 5k, Wed 20th August
1 Paul Freary 15:59
7 Trevor Morris 17:08
116 finishers
Fast, flat course round country lanes. Consistent with my third sub 17:10 5k this summer, but unable to break the 17 minute barrier.
For comparison, I was a minute quicker than Bramhall Park last Sunday.
