Wimbledon 10

A Three lap hilly course which started from Wimbledon park athletic track, up to Wimbledon common and then looped around past the all England tennis club. The race was situated only a mile away from our house so was no excuse for not doing it,even if we had raced a hilly 5k the day before (1st male and female). A small but quality field had turned up and after training on the same track as Huw Lobb every Tuesday it was fair to say that I was intimidated to see him warming up on the track. I had been told that there was a couple of handy (50 min) Egyptians present as well.

The race started in confusion when we were sent around the track for a second lap when we should have done only one. I watched Lobb and a couple of other runners disappear ahead and I tucked behind the Egyptians, this had a fundamental flaw when I dropped the first one after two miles and the second after three (he pulled out after four miles) so spent the rest of the race chasing a runner in the distance . The organizers had hurriedly changed the finish  location to try to make it accurate after the carnage start, but was probably about 250m long, and we had no idea until about 400m to go that they had changed the end. The race was really well organized though and a friendly atmosphere, One to do again I hope. Overall A good race even if the time was poor, Sally had her first ten mile time and came a superb 6th lady (I asked sally to sum up her race for the report and she said a plod and had given up the will to live on the third lap hill climb), The first being a 2.36 marathon runner. I came 5th which was pleasing considering the field. Roll on the next race.

1 Huw Lobb Bedford & Cty   51:58
5 Michael Halman Wilmslow RC   54:58
81 Sally Maddock Wilmslow RC 74:40

211 ran

Note that despite Mike’s comments (and famous modesty) this goes to the top of the Cheshire 2007 10m rankings by over 1 minute!  Not to be outdone Sally moves to 5th in the ladies table.
