Sunday April 24th.
The race has the feel of a village fete. The route is through country lanes around the village. Paul Saunders said there is no flat, it is either up or down, which is about right, although none of it steep. It was a beautiful Spring morning but pleasantly cool with the sun not breaking through until after the race had finished. Mike Halman admitted to sore legs after winning the YMCA 5-mile the previous day.
I felt I was running well, although checking my watch against each kilometre marker was telling a different story, but all the time I could see Don in front of me, much closer than he had been at Alsager. Tony had said this was not a fast course, I finished strongly picking up about 10 places in the final kilometre and although my time was poor, I felt I had performed well given the undulations. Except, of course, Don has not run much in recent weeks because of his knee problems.
And then Jane said she thought she’d done a PB. Thought? Well she had not put her watch on to convince herself she was just on a fun run. Do you sometimes worry about what lurks within the psychological make-up of runners? Anyway she left me to cheer Julie through to her PB. Very nice for them, but this is beginning to put my performance in a different perspective. Oh, and Mike finished second with a PB and Rob did a PB, and Mike Cooper did a PB. Time to go home and prepare to be the butt of the Group 4 comedians at Tuesday training
