This has been a popular race in the past for the SS.  However, this year numbers seemed to be down among the higher echelons of the club even though it is in the Grand Prix.

Once I had realised that I was going to Guilden Sutton and not Sutton near Langley we had a very smooth quick journey.  However, our normal parking space had been converted into houses, so we had to park in a farm which was rather further away, thus testing our navigation skills to find the car after the race.

We congregated in the residential road near the start, all with a good excuse for not being on top form; relays yesterday, 35 miles of Gritstone trail still in their legs, holiday excesses etc.  The course is all on road with two loops, slightly undulating with a sting in the tail as you turn the corner to come back to the Finish.

The relays in Di’s legs certainly didn’t stop her, she was first lady, not to mention ‘chicking’ all the WRC men.  You’re on fire Di !!  Trevor, Matt and Jarrod followed close behind.

Graham Duce took the 60 points in group 2 followed by Paul G feeling relaxed as Paul N was on holiday.  Louisa was still on a high after being part of our A team who finished 16th yesterday and who will hopefully go through to the National Relays, followed by Janine who was our third counter for the GP.  It was good to see Christian, his first appearance since becoming a father.  Those broken nights have not slowed him down.

Sally Price won the 60 points in group 3, yesterday’s relays were only a warm up for her.  Mark despite his ultra-run a couple of weeks ago disappeared off into the distance, which bodes well for his Loch Ness marathon next Sunday.  I felt on form after yesterday’s race, at least there weren’t any girls in knickers overtaking me.  I thought I had been pipped at the finish by a LV55, only to find that Vicky Perry of Altrincham took the prize finishing about 6 minutes ahead, so no chance of winning my category.  Considering that Chris arrived with his leg strapped up he ran pretty well (maybe that was a ploy to make us believe he would be slow).

Patrick writes:

Following on closely behind Nicky was our new lady veteran Trisha who, despite being 5 pounds over her fighting weight, scooped up the LV65 prize.  Failing to overtake Chris, who uncharacteristically and un-gentlemanly wouldn’t slow down for her to catch him.  Trish is confident she will up her effort at Congleton to overcome him next time.  Gail found that her long mileage in training for the ultra has not helped her speed.

Simon was top of the leader board in group 4 which should help overcome any disappointment in not having any prizes for his first V70 position.  Catherine and Sue (who would win the prize for best co-ordinated outfit) followed close behind and then Trevor.

Luckily the rain held off and it was a pleasant temperature for running.
