Dial M for … Marathon

For those who are not on Facebook, cat has updated us on Malcolm’s adventurous challenge..

Some of you may know that Malcolm is taking on the almighty challenge of the pennine way across 10 days! A marathon a day – spanning 268 miles!
Here’s an update on how he’s getting on from day 1 to day 6! (He’s currently on day 7, wish him luck!)

Malcolm’s Pennine Way Day 1 –

After a 9am start and a warm up run from the B&B Malc set off from the official start of the Pennine Way – the day involved lots of climbing up through kinder, following the long and winding path.
On approach to Snake Pass the weather closed in and it rained heavily despite the forecast saying there was no rain for that day!
The first day was always going to be a tough one at 28 miles, but United Utilities decided to make it a bit tougher by closing the path over Torside river dam, adding an extra two miles down to the next dam.
Then there was a never ending climb up to the summit of Black finishing at Standedge where tired legs finally got some rest.

Day 2 –

After completing 30 miles the day before, Malc made sure to keep Dr Kate happy by popping on his calf sleeves! The first climb took him up to Millstone Edge, where the weather looked good.
The first trig point of the day was the summit of Dinner Stone, the route went through to Lancashire & past the most Easterly point in the county! The next trig point was up White Hill which not long after routed into West Yorkshire and over the big Pennine Way footbridge of the M62.
After a few more summits Malc found the ‘infinity reservoir’ which he thought would never end! One exciting feature of the day was Stoodley Pike monument, where Malc took a moment to climb the spiral staircase to take in the incredible views from the platform!
The final ascent took Malc towards Haworth, the home of the famous Bronte sisters – then finished with recovery in the pub with some good grub and time to reflect on the day’s effort.

Day 3 –

A cold and drizzly start meant the OMM jacket was worn for the first hour! There were some funky features and just the one trig point this day, one particularly interesting sight was a double decker canal bridge – who would have thought!
Lots of miles covered featureless farmland but this meant some furry friends!
We were excited to take the bear wagon from the den and support Malc with a brew and bit of cake to fuel his day!
The finish for the day was in the heart of Yorkshire at Malham!

Day 4 –

The start of the day involved a climb to the famous Malham Cove & Limestone pavement, then it was off to Malham tarn!
The weather took a little bit of a turn this day with some persistent low cloud and rain, which meant the summit of Pen-y-Ghent (2,277ft), one of the Yorkshire three peaks, didn’t have quite the view you’d normally get from a trig point! A phenomenal effort to get up there though!
Day 4 was definitely a tough one, particularly with it raining for most of the day, but after a snooze and some food Malc felt much better.

Day 5 –

Thankfully there were sunnier skies at the start in Hawes, much nicer than the rain the day before! This was the longest section of the Pennine Way excursion! Although the weather was dry, the ground was still quite wet, which meant the inov8’s got to do what they’re best at (his trusty RB socks helped too!)
One of the summits today was Great Shunner Fell which was the highest point of the Pennine way so far at 2,349ft!
As opposed to the previous day of mainly exposed moorland, there were plenty of terrain changes, through woodland, rocky terrain, open moorland – a bit of everything!
One point of interest today was Britain’s highest Inn at 1732ft – it even had its own snow plough!
With the longest leg done, the next day is a bit shorter which is a relief!

Day 6 –

This was a shorter stint, which started with a flat section along the River Tee. Most of the route followed the river onto the moors (although this meant going up -hill!).
The Bears were out again today to support Malc,, though he proved harder to find this time with Dr Kate and Cat having to pick up speed to catch Malc after seeing him beyond the reservoir!
There’s another slightly shorter day and then three longer days to finish if all goes to plan!

He’s a superstar! ….More to follow when he finishes.

Thank you Cat
