Buxton Carnival 4 Mile –

This race is the curtain raiser for the Buxton Carnival when Buxton gets swamped for Carnival Day. My parents moved from Sheffield to Hope in the Hope Valley when I was very young and the main event of the rustic year was the Wakes Week which had events every evening including a senior hill race. Maybe it was there I first took interest in running but Hope Wakes was a village version of Buxton so returning to run the summer series a few years ago was quite nostalgic. Also running was ex Buxton resident and Buxton A C member Andrew Whittingham.
The course starts through the main shopping street, past the Opera House, then one loop, all on roads of which nearly half go uphill so not a fast course. Andrew was nursing a sore Achilles so pleased with his first V45. I was again the sole representative of V75 – and V70 as it as it turned out – so hardly surprisingly I won that, but I did manage to break the “soft” course record which was very pleasing.

1st 20.45 William Strangeway Lincoln Wellington
7th 23.29 Andrew Whittingham Wilmslow R C 1st V45
21st 26.18 Amy Clarke Buxton A C
108th 35.47 Simon Fenton Wilmslow R C 1st V75

146 ran.
